Hipgnosis rock studio looms
BMG has announced their new feature documentary Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis), the feature-length documentary debut of acclaimed filmmaker, photographer and creative director Anton Corbijn. The film chronicles legendary designers Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell as they form their iconic album art design studio Hipgnosis during the effervescence of the 1960s and go on to help shape a new visual language. for rock in the 70s.
BMG co-financed the film with Hipgnosis Songs Fund, a specialist investment company whose name was inspired by the design company.
It features new interviews with rock legends including BMG publishing client Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Graham Gouldman of 10cc, Noel Gallagher and many others.
Over the years, famous Hipgnosis artwork has been featured on artwork by BMG clients including Roger Waters, Black Sabbath, Scorpions, T. Rex, Labi Siffre, Nazareth, Bad Company, Sammy Hagar, Status Quo, Robin Trower , Gerry Rafferty, Mick Taylor; and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
The documentary is the latest in BMG’s growing lineup of music-related film and television projects, and the fourth film BMG has featured in recent months, following Lunar Reveriethe definitive new portrait of David Bowie, which had its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival; Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan and T. Rex, which premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival; and Dio: dreamers never diewhich premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival.
SSquaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis) is produced by Ged Doherty, Trish D Chetty and Colin Firth of Raindog Films. The film was written by Trish D Chetty and edited by Andrew Hulme.
