Young people from across the borough showed their talent in art, design, technology and media as part of the National Saturday Club program which takes place at Barking & Dagenham College (@BarkingCollege).
The National Saturday Club Trust is a charity supported by the Department for Education and Arts Council England. It offers young people between the ages of 13 and 16 a free opportunity to learn new skills, learn about subjects they love, and find out more about further and higher education and future careers.
Barking & Dagenham College launched the on-campus program earlier this year. This week saw the culmination of all the efforts of the participants, when they put together a club showcase to showcase all their work to friends and family.
Every Saturday for 10 weeks, some 50 young people attended special programs in art, design and technology at the College and at the new East London Institute of Technology.
Classes included everything from a taste of esports and roles within the industry, to art and design, which included the ability to create your own unique products using printing 3D and laser cutting.
It also included courses in film, audio, and media, which the College was the first in the nation to pilot as part of the Saturday Club program. It was an opportunity for young people to discover the world of media, using the on-campus recording studios where they scripted, recorded and edited their own productions!
David Staley, Head of Schools and Community Engagement at the College, said:
“The Saturday Club program was a great opportunity for the young people to try out a range of skills they may not have tried before and they really enjoyed it. The job they have done has been fantastic and I am delighted that we were able to organize this event.
In particular, the College was delighted to be able to offer young people the chance to discover the world of cinema and the media. David adds: “The film and screen industries provide an exciting and real opportunity for young people from all walks of life. East London in particular at this time is a great place for young people interested in business. It was a great opportunity to really showcase the fantastic opportunities available to young people who might be interested in entering the industry. ”
